UN Environment Assembly To Address Triple Planetary Crisis

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is set to hold its sixth United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA- 6) next week from 26 February to 1 March at its Headquarters in Nairobi

The event comes at a critical time given that the world is currently grappling with an unprecedented environmental challenge, impacting every corner of our planet.

Inger Andersen, Under Secretary General of the United Nations and Executive Director, UNEP said UNEA 6 is set to address these critical issues focusing on the triple planetary crisis of climate change, nature and biodiversity loss, and pollution and waste.

Andersen was speaking during climate and clean Air conference.

UNEA-6 is Themed ‘Effective, inclusive and sustainable multilateral actions to tackle climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution’.

The Assembly meets every two years to provide overarching policy guidance and define policy responses to address emerging environmental challenges and set the global environmental agenda.

All 193 member states
of the UN and more than 5000 representatives from governments, the scientific community and the private sector will next week gather in the world’s highest-level decision-making body to tackle some of the planet’s most pressing environmental challenges.

Previous Assemblies have played a critical role in shaping global environmental policies and the UNEA 6 is expected to borrow a leaf in accelerating the global campaign against the triple planetary crisis.

This year’s sessions at the Assembly, member states and stakeholders are expected to debate some 19 draft resolutions with a focus on addressing the interlinkages of the triple planetary crisis and the role of multilateralism.
