Terrorist threat remains high in Sweden

The level of the terrorist threat in Sweden remains high. This was stated by Justice Minister Gunnar Strömmer at a press conference.

‘The high level of terrorist threat remains, although the threat picture is somewhat different. Sweden is no longer a propaganda center for extremist fighters,’ he said.

The minister explained that there were three parallel sources of threats to Sweden’s internal security. These are terrorism and violent extremism, state actors hostile to the kingdom, and criminality that threatens the system.

The conflict in the Middle East could also become a threat to the West and Sweden, as Fredrik Hallström, operational head of the Security Police (Sepo), explained. ‘Sweden can become a platform for conflicts in other countries,’ he believes.

Last summer, the terrorist threat level was raised in Sweden to four points out of five. The reason was statements by terrorist organizations, including Islamic State* and Al-Qaeda**, which designated Sweden as a ‘priority target’ after a number of
Koran burnings.
