Labot sheep farm in Lelan Ward, Marakwet West Sub County, successfully auctioned 49 Corriedale sheep to interested buyers from farming and business communities.
The event resulted in the sale of prized sheep at prices ranging between Sh10, 000 and Sh12, 600. Robert Lagat, the Livestock Chief Officer, expressed his satisfaction with the outcome of the auction, highlighting the farm’s pivotal role in advancing sheep breeding within the county.
‘Recently, we introduced high-breed corriedale sheep to the farm. This is the best way to improve sheep breeds in the area,’ Lagat remarked. He added that Corriedale sheep are known for their fast maturation, which is good news for farmers as it allows them to turn a profit in a shorter time frame.
After presiding over the auction, Lagat emphasized the significance of Labot farm as a model sheep breeding center in the region. Lelan ward Member of County Assembly (MCA) Priscilla Kurgat echoed Lagat’s sentiments, expressing enthusiasm for the farm’s introduction of new
breeds.
Labot Farm offers convenience and accessibility to local farmers, eliminating the need for them to travel to Narok and Laikipia for breeding rams.
Lastly, she noted that the auction’s success marks a milestone for Labot Farm and underscores its growing reputation as a hub for quality livestock breeding. With the introduction of high-quality Corriedale sheep, the farm is poised to play a crucial role in enhancing the local sheep farming industry, providing farmers with access to superior breeding stock and bolstering economic opportunities within the community.
