Lodwar residents have raised concern over illegal dumping of waste in the county headquarters.
According to Jane Akai, one of the businesspersons in the town, the waste is posing a health risk to residents.
‘Hotels and restaurants are particularly affected by the dumping of waste near their eateries,’ she pointed out, calling for stringent action to be meted on those found dumping the waste.
Another resident James Epem blamed residents for recklessly dumping the waste near waste collection points.
‘It is unfortunate that people carry the waste from their homes and business premises only for them to dump them right next to the waste bins,’ said Epem.
In response to the concerns, Lodwar Municipality officials on Monday conducted a crackdown targeting illegal dumping and unauthorized construction on public land.
The operation, led by the municipality’s Deputy Manager, Simon Nangiro, focused on individuals and businesses violating municipal regulations by encroaching on road reserves, alleys, and passagewa
ys.
Nangiro emphasized that the crackdown is part of ongoing efforts to ensure compliance with municipal rules, contributing to the overall cleanliness and safety of Lodwar.
He stressed the importance of maintaining a clean environment, especially as the town prepares to host the upcoming Tobong’ulore Festival at Ekalees.
‘To support the efforts of our contracted garbage collection service provider, we urge business owners to submit their waste management plans to the Municipality office for better supervision and to prevent waste from piling up,’ Nangiro said.
The operation also served as an opportunity for the Municipality team to educate residents and business owners on the importance of adhering to municipal regulations and enhancing service delivery ahead of the festival.
‘We are particularly concerned with garages and vendors who burn tyres and other wastes, leading to air and soil pollution. Stern measures will be taken against the culprits,’ he said.

aki Sale Yard, Lodwar Fresh Produce Market, and Kenyatta Line Street, accompanied by officers from the enforcement unit, public health, environment, and fire services.
