The Red Cross and the Red Crescent Movement will be setting up the first international field training school in Africa to be domiciled at the Kenya Red Cross offices in Lkuroto village in Samburu West Sub County.
The Kenya Red Cross Society (KRCS) Secretary General (SG) Dr. Idris Ahmed said that this is an opportunity to train all Red Cross and Red Crescent international staff and local staff on community projects focused on humanitarian needs.
‘The field school will equip humanitarian workers with skills that match emerging technologies so as to efficiently deliver humanitarian relief assistance, design projects for communities starting from water to food security.’ he said.
The SG added that the school which will be launched in the next few months is expected to host a two-week international training per quarter and the trainees will support the local communities deliver health outreaches, design water systems, attend to veterinary issues among other community needs.
Ahmed also pledged that the Kenya Re
d Cross will work with the county government in order to make Samburu County food secure by establishing an irrigation project in Samburu west sub county where the 20 percent of arable land in the entire county lies.
‘Samburu West has the potential to feed the entire county and I am requesting the Deputy governor for Samburu together with the community to identify a suitable site for an irrigation project and bring the proposal which will be implemented by the Kenya Red Cross.’ he said.
Samburu West MP Naisula Lesuuda welcomed the move by the Kenya Red Cross to set up the international field school and further urged young locals to work closely with the Red Cross Society by enrolling as volunteers for their development and future with the organisation.
