Migori self-help groups have been granted Sh1.39 million from the County Poverty Eradication Funds (CPEF) to enhance their socioeconomic activities.
Speaking during the issuing of cheques at the social protection office in Migori town, Suba East Division Assistant County Commissioner Thomas Koros said that he was optimistic that the funds would grow to assist more groups within the county.
CPEF loans have primarily benefitted Suna West and East sub-counties, with the majority being second-time borrowers who have repaid their loans.
‘We disbursed funds to two groups, with the second borrowers receiving Shs160,000 and the first receiving Shs100,000. Last year, only two groups defaulted and were unable to be funded, ‘said Koros.
Koros urged the local administrator to promote the funds and raise awareness for their uptake to eradicate poverty.
‘We have Women Enterprise Funds, Youth Enterprise Development Funds, Uwezo Funds, and Hustler Funds, and through awareness creation, the public will benefit to improve
their livelihoods,’ said Koros.
County Poverty Eradication Funds Committee (CPEC) chairperson Bishop Esau Jobando urged the beneficiaries to repay in time to allow for a window to borrow and give opportunities for others to benefit from the funds.
He said that the County Poverty Eradication Fund is free from interest and has a grace period of three months and a 12-month’ repayment period that can easily be managed if the beneficiaries utilise the cash well.
Suna East Social Development Officer Margaret Kachenge said that they hope the funds will grow and expand to other sub-counties to boost the socio-economic development of the county.
Kachenge said the department will lobby for more funds to include more groups to empower the community. She, however, urged the beneficiaries to repay in time to access more funds for their economic development.
