Legislator Pushing For Creation Of NG-CDF Emergency Fund

Kaiti Member of Parliament (MP) Joshua Kimilu intends to table a bill in parliament to create an emergency fund from the National Government Constituency Fund (NG-CDF) to be used to assist people affected by disasters.

Kimilu said the proposed emergency kitty would enable MPs to supplement the government and partners’ efforts in responding effectively to any emerging disasters that affect citizens, like the current enhanced rains across the country.

The MP spoke Wednesday at the Kya Kituku Evacuation Centre in Kilungu Sub County while distributing food items to over 405 people affected by the ongoing El Nino rains pounding Makueni County.

‘In parliament, we will bring a bill to allow the board to give us authority to spend part of the NGCDF allocation to help people displaced from their homes,’ said Kimilu while addressing the media.

The legislator distributed maize flour, sugar, rice, salt, tea leaves, vegetables, bar soaps, and cooking oil, besides assuring them that he will replace window panes in cla
ssrooms to minimise the cold they were experiencing at the site.

Most of the affected families were from Kyang’aa and Mutuyu villages in Kilungu Ward and Itaa village in Ilima Ward.

The MP also toured the Katulye Evacuation Camp, where he gave a similar amount of food to the displaced families.

He urged residents to remain vigilant during this rainy season while also cautioning them against crossing flooded rivers as they risked death.

‘In my Kaiti Constituency, we have lost five people, and floods have also destroyed a section of houses. I appeal to the residents, especially those in mudslide-prone areas, to move to safer grounds or camps,’ he noted.
