Kavango West still has 153 villages without access to water: Ausiku

The Kavango West Region has 405 villages in total of which 153, with the majority in Mpungu constituency, have no access to water.

This was revealed by the Governor of the Kavango West Region, Sirkka Ausiku during her State of the Region Address (SORA) at Nkurenkuru on Friday.

Ausiku said she appreciates the Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Land Reform, ReconNamibia and Metzger Drilling for continuing to drill, install and rehabilitate boreholes in the communities.

However, more needs to be done in the area of water provision, she said, while calling on NamWater to construct a water pipeline along the national road.

Ausiku further announced that the construction of municipal services is ongoing at Nkurenkuru, which thus far has 23 extensions with 7 115 erven.

“Of the 7 115 erven, 1 066 have been fully serviced. The servicing of Extension 6 under a public-private partnership with the Development Bank of Namibia serviced 337 plots,” she stated.

The Nkurenkuru Town Council has so far allocated 1 629 plots to the youth and 1 012 to professionals.

Mass housing has under the housing initiative of the council constructed 49 houses, while the Shack Dwellers Federation of Namibia has constructed 150 houses at Nkurenkuru, and developed 42 plots and 71 plots at the villages of Kahenge and Kakuro respectively.

Private developers managed to construct 92 houses, while the National Housing Enterprise built 70 houses and Build Together, 91 houses.

On agriculture, the governor said her region is experiencing drought this year and has appealed to the Office of the Prime Minister to speed up the rollout of the drought relief programme.

She highlighted that there is a need for the establishment of a seed processing plant at Katwitwi settlement as the region has 46 registered seed growers.
