Hospital Closure Ordered After Patient’s Death at Ominicare Medical Limited.

Nairobi: The Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC) has mandated the immediate shutdown of Ominicare Medical Limited in response to the death of a patient following surgery at the facility. Public Health and Professional Standards Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni announced the closure after the tragic incident involving Ms. Lucy Wambui, who underwent a plastic surgery procedure known as ‘Body by Design.’

According to Kenya News Agency, the KMPDC carried out a thorough investigation into the medical facility’s operations and discovered significant non-compliance with established medical regulations. The investigation highlighted violations specifically related to Sections 4 and 15 of the Medical Practitioners and Dentists Act (Cap 253). Ms. Muthoni emphasized that the inspection revealed the facility was failing to meet essential patient safety standards, which are crucial for safeguarding patients’ health and well-being.

The Principal Secretary further stated that the facility will remain
closed until it aligns with the necessary public safety standards and implements corrective measures to ensure compliance with patient safety protocols. A comprehensive investigation is still underway concerning the institution and the personnel involved in Ms. Wambui’s treatment.

PS Muthoni mentioned that the Council is assessing the level of responsibility and will determine appropriate actions to ensure accountability and prevent future occurrences of malpractice. She assured that the State Department for Public Health and Professional Standards, through KMDC, is dedicated to maintaining the highest healthcare standards across Kenya and will persist in monitoring compliance to protect the public.

She concluded by stating that updates on the ongoing investigation will be shared as more information becomes available.
