Tharaka Nithi County Governor Muthomi Njuki has launched a programme aimed at boosting maintenance of roads and drainage systems in the county.

The programme, dubbed ‘Road Marshals Programme,’ will seek to ensure a quick response to emergencies and disasters in the region.

The programme was launched in all wards where volunteer personnel were selected to support county road maintenance.

The County Road Maintenance team was equipped with tools to aid in daily activities, including intensive training on road management.

Speaking at Chuka Picnic DC grounds while commissioning the project, the governor said that the team would receive monthly stipends to boost their livelihood and an all-inclusive National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) medical cover.

‘We want to ensure you receive monthly stipends and insurance cover for you and your family,’ said governor Njuki.

He added that the team is made up of youths to help resolve the current high rate of unemployment in the country.

‘It is very commendable that our young people are ready to work irrespective of the kind of job they get,’ he said.

Njuki said the team would be supervised by ward administrators and Members of County Assembly (MCAs) in all sub-counties.

He explained that the programme would compose a quick response team that would come in handy during the current rainy season, which destroys drainage systems and causes road blocking in some areas.

Residents appreciated the initiative, saying it would be of great essence to the communities that experience access to roads due to poor drainage.
