Government Calls For Stricter Action Against Grass Fires In Wajir

Wajir County Commissioner (CC) Karuku Ngumo has issued a stern warning to area chiefs, emphasizing the need for decisive action against individuals responsible for burning grasses, leading to rampant grass fires in the region.

Speaking during a school donation event at Elnur in Eldas Sub- County on Tuesday, Ngumo underscored the severe consequences of such actions on the community and the environment.

He urged the area chiefs to collaborate with local authorities and ensure that those found guilty of causing grass fires face appropriate legal consequences.

‘The recurring issue of grass fires has not only posed a threat to our environment but has also had a profound impact on the livelihoods of our community members. It is imperative that we take a unified stand against these destructive practices,’ stated the Commissioner.

The local chiefs were urged to intensify awareness campaigns within their respective jurisdictions, educating residents about the dangers of starting fires in open areas, especially dur
ing dry seasons.

The county Commissioner’s call for stricter measures comes in the wake of increased incidents of grass fires, which have not only destroyed vegetation but have also led to disruptions in the lives of local communities.

He emphasized that combating this issue requires collective efforts and cooperation from all stakeholders.

Local authorities are expected to enforce the directives promptly, ensuring that those responsible for starting grass fires are brought to justice.

Ngumo at the same time highlighted the ongoing construction of 240 housing units in Wajir County, signaling a significant stride towards addressing housing needs in the region.

He emphasized the government’s commitment to making the affordable housing service easily accessible to the public.

He announced that individuals interested in the programme can now conveniently register by dialing *832# on their mobile phones and selecting ‘Boma Yangu.’

Ngumo emphasized the simplicity and efficiency of this registration process,
stating, ‘Services are given through mobile phones, making it easier for the residents of Wajir to participate in the government’s housing initiative.’

The affordable housing programme aims to provide quality and reasonably priced housing solutions to citizens across the country. With 240 units already in progress in Wajir County, the government is taking tangible steps to address the housing challenges faced by the local population.

Ngumo encouraged residents to embrace this opportunity, emphasizing that the affordable housing program is a testament to the government’s dedication to improving living conditions for its citizens.
