Côte d’Ivoire-AIP/ The majority of political violence occurs during elections (Study)

Abidjan, A study initiated by the non-governmental organizations (NGOs) Interpeace and Indigo Côte d’Ivoire, in collaboration with the European Union, revealed on Tuesday, January 25, 2022 that the majority of political violence in Côte d’Ivoire are orchestrated during the election period.

The results of this study were delivered in Abidjan Plateau, on the occasion of the assessment ceremony which comes after 24 months of implementation of the “Précis” pilot project, which aims to understand, prevent and manage political violence in Côte d’Ivoire. ivory during electoral periods.

This project was carried out in the communes of Yopougon, Abobo, Bouaké and Bangolo, with the participation of more than 3,000 people. These NGOs have revealed the factors linked to electoral political violence and have also identified ways to curb it.

According to the director of Interpeace Côte d’Ivoire, Margaux Pimond, political violence has its sources in “propaganda and ethno-nationalist discourse”. She advocated the establishment of an analytical, inclusive and participatory approach for all, which constitutes a collaborative mechanism to effectively prevent the risks associated with political and electoral violence.

The technical director of the Ministry of Reconciliation and Social Cohesion, Adjé Maurice, expressed his full support for the project and urged the populations to include the electoral period in a framework of peace and cohesion.

“Policy must strengthen social cohesion and not weaken it,” he declared, in the presence of the regional representative of Interpeace for West Africa, Stefano Ghiradi, the head of delegation of the European Union in Ivory Coast, Massino Scalorbi.

Indigo Côte d’Ivoire is an NGO under Ivorian law committed to strengthening social cohesion and promoting the development of dialogue for change. She works in collaboration with Interpeace, an international organization in the service of peacebuilding.
