The national union of public primary education in Côte d’Ivoire (SNEPPCI) pleaded with the government for the ratification of Convention 190 of the International Labor Organization during a workshop training for its activists on Friday March 31, 2023 at the meeting room of the prefecture of Agnibilékrou (East, Indéni-Djuablin region).
The training focused on female leadership and gender-based violence (GBV).
Professor Claude Koutou, trainer of the workshop explained that Convention 190 of the ILO is a mechanism that aims to protect women against all forms of violence they suffer and which hinder their socio-professional development.
Mr. Koutou said that the ILO has established new global standards which aim to end violence and harassment in the world of work and obliges governments which ratify it C190, to put in place the laws and the policy measures needed to prevent and address violence and harassment in the world of work.
“The convention represents a historic opportunity to shape a future of work based on dignity and respect for all,” he noted. He underlined that all these reasons motivated his union to engage alongside the ILO in the global campaign in support of C190.
The SNEPPCI activist called on stakeholders and civil society actors to get involved so that the convention is ratified and implemented by national governments and legislatures around the world. A call received favorably by the 46 teachers who benefited from the training. They promised to act as intermediaries with other women with a view to popularizing the lessons learned and improving their working conditions.
ILO Convention 190 is the first international treaty to recognize the right of everyone to a world of work free from violence and harassment, including gender-based violence and harassment. The convention was adopted in June 2019 by the International Labor Conference of the ILO. It entered into force on June 25, 2021.
