Côte d’Ivoire-AIP/ Reflections on projects related to mining for the young people of Kalamon and Gogo

Bouna, The members of the Bounkani natural resources monitoring and management committee reflected on projects related to mining for the young people of Kalamon (Doropo) and Gogo (Téhini ), as part of the Resilience for Peace (R4P) project, led by the NGO Equal Access International (EAI) and which receives funding from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

The meeting focused on the theme “What project for the youth of Kalamon and Gogo in connection with mining”.

It took place from Tuesday January 18 to Thursday January 20, 2022 at the Bouna youth center under the chairmanship of the secretary general of the Doropo prefecture, Abro Koutouan Alphonse.

It brought together all the technical structures in the field of natural resource management who are also members of the departmental monitoring committees.

The Departmental Director of Mines and Geology of Bouna, Malan Assemian, presented the mining context of the localities of Kalamon and Gogo with regard to the level of exploitation, the actors involved, the impacts of this exploitation on the villages. .

Due to the environmental impact of clandestine gold panning in these areas, drafts of priority projects were proposed to be considered with the young people of these localities in order to bring them out of hiding, by offering them opportunities to obtain permits or authorizations for mining.

These opportunities for formalization, professionalization or retraining have been considered by the members of the natural resources monitoring and management committee, who have at this level developed a strategy for implementing actions and activities, according to a clearly defined schedule that has been adopted.

As part of the implementation of the R4P project, the NGO EAI set up a committee for the monitoring and management of natural resources, made up of technical structures linked to this sector, during a brainstorming workshop which was held from August 01 to 03, 2021 in Bouna. This committee has been split into several departmental committees for better monitoring of activities.

The Resilience for Peace Project (R4P) is a five-year USAID-funded initiative to build community resilience and learning in the face of current security challenges in the northern border areas of Côte d’Ivoire. Its main objective is to carry out actions that reduce the socio-economic vulnerabilities of communities in these areas.
