Côte d’Ivoire-AIP/ OIA-Riz aims for Côte d’Ivoire’s rice sovereignty

Yamoussoukro, Jan 23, 2022 (AIP) – The new president of the rice interprofessional, elected in Yamoussoukro on Friday January 21, 2022, Diabaté Mory affirmed the same day the ambition of his organization to make Côte d’Ivoire a sovereign country. “who will not only be self-sufficient in rice production but who will export”.

“We have a ten-year program and you will see that many things will change because there is a very strong involvement of the President of the Republic and his government”, affirmed Diabaté Mory, after his election preceded by the renewal of the colleges. producers, processors and distributors.

Sufficient investment in the development of cultivable areas as well as water control are the main concerns of the Ivorian authorities who provide constant support to the sector, noted the director of the cabinet of the Minister of State, Minister of Agriculture and of rural development, N’guétia Réné.

According to the director general of the agency for the development of the rice sector (Aderiz), Yacouba Dembélé, this commodity produced, marketed and consumed in Côte d’Ivoire was not yet the subject of “the attention that it should merit “.

This is why since 2012 the political will has made it possible to put in place certain fundamentals such as the provision of fertilizers, seeds and herbicides to producers.

“With the OIA-Riz, the actors themselves will take over from the State in the organization, in the structuring of the sector”, he underlined.

Local rice consumption in Côte d’Ivoire is around 1.9 t for an estimated production of 1.3 t.

For the year 2022 the State plans to inject 15 billion in the sector in order, among other things, to put inputs, reduce the load of fertilizers and herbicides and make some moves, in particular rehabilitations.

It is thus 22,000 hectares that should be rehabilitated to allow farmers to work in better conditions.

“These funds will also enable us to set up appropriate mechanization equipment. We have set up a system that allows us to create agricultural SMEs to provide services,” added the director of Aderiz.
