Côte d’Ivoire-AIP/ More than 24,000 people affected by an awareness campaign on female circumcision (NGO)

A total of 24,120 people were affected by the awareness campaign for the fight against excision from July 2021 to March 2023 in the regions of Hambol, Tchologo du Bounkani and Gontougo, noted the head of the program to combat female genital mutilation (FGM) at the non-governmental organization Alliance Côte d’Ivoire, Dr N’da Saphié Roseline.

The NGO Alliance Côte d’Ivoire undertakes actions in these regions, aimed at bringing the communities to a change of mentality and leading to the abandonment of excision.

Dr. N’da indicated that these sensitizations consisted of educational talks, focus groups, home visits, and even individual interviews to convey messages on the fight against FGM and the possibilities of abandoning the practice. One of the innovations of this campaign remains the promotion of dances that value women and put an end to the practice of female circumcision.

As a result of these actions, more than 5,000 people were affected in Bouna, 4,624 in Kong, 5,796 in Dabakala and 8,095 in Bondoukou.

”All these actions taken by Alliance CI have led to community dialogues and ceremonies of commitment to abandon the practice,” said Dr N’da during the handing-over ceremony. raising awareness of the fight against excision, Friday, July 07, 2023 in Assoum 1, a village in the sub-prefecture of Bouna.

The NGO Alliance CI’s strategy to combat female circumcision is based on national legislation and policies to combat the practice with the active participation of specialized decentralized structures for health, social protection, education, security, justice and community mechanisms for monitoring and preventing GBV/FGM.
