Côte d’Ivoire-AIP/Inter/HRW calls on the Tunisian government to put an end to the collective expulsions of migrants to the desert
The NGO Human Rights Watch (HRW) has called on the Tunisian government to end the “collective expulsions” of black African migrants to the desert on the border between Tunisia and Libya, reports the Turkish Anadolu News Agency.
According to this NGO, Thursday, July 06, 2023, hundreds of sub-Saharan migrants found themselves in a desert region of southern Tunisia near the Libyan border, after having been expelled in recent days from the city of Sfax (Center-East of Tunisia) , against a backdrop of tensions with the local population who demanded their departure.
This operation comes after several days of tension and violence following the death of a young Tunisian, Nizar Amri, on Monday July 3, in clashes with sub-Saharan migrants.
According to official figures relayed by the Tunisian Forum for Economic and Social Rights (Ftdes), some 21,000 Sub-Saharans are present in Tunisia, a country of twelve million inhabitants. Most are illegal.
