It was a sigh of relief for 10 bright and needy students in Nanyuki School following a donation of Sh1 million by the school alumni association to sponsor their four-year education course.
Speaking during a Thanksgiving ceremony over the weekend at the school, Paul Mugo, alumnae representative, said that the donation was necessitated due to the increased number of needy students who were unable to pay their tuition fees at the school.
‘With our school population increasing sharply each year, the strain on school finances has become undeniable. As the Nanyuki School Alumni Association, we are committed to stepping in and assisting,’ Mugo told parents, teachers, and students who had gathered at the Nanyuki School grounds for the Thanksgiving ceremony.
Mugo revealed that the awarding of the scholarship to the most deserving students in the school was done after vigorous vetting by the school vetting committee, which aimed at ensuring only needy students benefited.
‘To ensure that our donations get to the nee
diest students, the school board of management has created a committee task force for vigorously vetting those who are eligible for assistance; only the most deserving cases deserve our support,’ he added.
He appealed to the parents and well-wishers for partnership in a move that would see more needy students at the school benefit.
Laikipia Deputy Governor Rueben Kamuri said that the county government was committed to offering partial scholarships to needy students aimed at uplifting the standard of education in the county.
The deputy governor called on parents to support the Nanyuki School administration to enable it to produce good results in the future.
Nanyuki School Chief Principal Solomon Kipkoech said the school had achieved excellent results in last year’s KCSE examinations.
He thanked the Nanyuki school stakeholders for supporting them, which culminated in them recording a stellar performance.
The school had 15 A grades, which was an improvement compared to the 2022 KCSE results, where only fou
r candidates had scored A grade, and at the same time, the mean score moved from 8.890 the previous year to 8.897 this year.
The school had 331 candidates who sat for KCSE in 2023, compared with 237 in 2022.
