Boulkiemdé: Saria research station wants to replace plastic bags used by nurserymen with clods of earth

To address the problem of environmental pollution, the Saria research station has developed a technology aimed at replacing the plastic bags used by nurserymen with clods of earth made from local materials, AIB noted.

“The Environment and Forestry department of the Saria station is conducting a project on the use of clods of earth in the production of plants,” said research engineer Natacha Edwige Thiombiano on Wednesday, during a visit by journalists to the field.

According to her, the aim of this project is to put on the market pots produced from local materials, notably clay and manure, instead of plastic bags.

This work aims, in the long term, to eradicate the use of sachet pots in the production of plants in Burkina Faso.

“For the production of seedlings, we usually use pots made of plastic bags that pollute the environment. To remedy this, we made earth clods made of clay and manure,” says the researcher.

The technique involves molding clay and manure using molds of different diameters depending o
n the type of plant, then testing the process in a nursery with several plants, including baobab and tamarind.

According to the researcher, another aspect of the project is to observe the evolution of these plants after their passage in the nursery.

The aim is to see whether these plants exhibit better growth and resistance to various hazards.

Producers will be able to adopt this technique after the process, she argued.

It should be noted that Mrs. Thiombiano is carrying out several projects to promote local wild plant species.

Its mission is to promote their domestication among producers.
