Kajiado South Member of Parliament Sakimba Parashina has commissioned a modern 200-bed capacity dormitory at Olchorro Secondary School in the area.
Parashina also awarded Kenya Certificate for Secondary Education (KCSE) candidates at the school, who performed exceptionally well during last year’s exams.
The legislator called upon the government to consider building another dormitory in the school for girls due to the challenges they were facing in accessing the school.
He noted that because of the long distance from home, many parents have been forced to rent houses for their daughters in order to access school with ease.
Parashina noted that the construction of another dormitory for the girls will help them settle in and hence improve their performances.
The MP further noted that it was dangerous for the girls to be renting rooms, which has led to rising numbers of dropouts due to early pregnancies.
The legislator also pointed out that when girls live in their rental rooms without their parents, they become an easy prey to members of the public, who may take undue advantage of them, leading to early marriages.
During the Day of the African Child celebrations held at Kisanjani, Loitoktok, on Friday, it was revealed that statistically, the sub-county was leading in Kajiado County in school dropout cases as well as early marriages.
