50 Women In Makueni Undergo Successful Fistula Operations

Over 50 women in Makueni County suffering from fistula have benefited from successful surgeries to correct the disorders.

A Gynecologist and Fistula Surgeon Dr. Doris Mbithi at Makueni Mother and Child section in Makueni County Referral Hospital said the operations are geared towards giving sanctity and dignity to hundreds of women who are suffering from the disease.

Dr. Mbithi speaking today said the campaign is being carried out jointly with the County Government of Makueni, John Hopkins Program for International Education in Gynecology and Obstetrics (JHPIEGO), Ministry of Health and four surgeons who are undertaking the surgeries.

‘So far we are having screening of patients going on in our health facilities and have had 148 women screened, 50 of them who turned positive to the disorder have undergone surgery at Mother and Child Section,’ said Dr. Mbithi.

She appealed to women across the county suffering from fistula to come and be screened and benefit from the free campaign that will come to a close o
n Friday this week.

Further the Surgeon revealed that fistula is caused by obstructed labour, cancer, radio therapy, trauma like defilement and rape, unsafe abortions and severe infections at the lower reproductive organs among women.

‘I encourage women to visit Makueni Referral Hospital for routine fistula care services conducted every Tuesday at Mother and Child section. Fistula is treatable and women need to take advantage of such free surgery campaigns,’ she added.
