COVID-19: Ivorian government receives 100,000 doses of Pfizer vaccine

The Ivorian government, through the Ministry of Health, Public Hygiene and Universal Health Coverage, received 100,000 doses of Pfizer vaccine on Wednesday June 16, 2021 at the ‘Félix Houphouët-Boigny International Airport in Abidjan .

The Minister of Health, Pierre N’gou Dimba, stressed that these 100,000 additional doses acquired thanks to the quality of relations with the outside will be administered to the Abidjan population aged 18 and over. This vaccine will be used, the time to receive further doses thanks to the Covax initiative and the partners (Gavi and WHO, Unicef), he said.

A batch of 100,000 doses of COVID-19 vaccine was sent on May 30, 2021 as part of the Covax mechanism. The day before, the country had received 25,000 doses of AstraZeneca vaccines from France, as part of the cooperation between the two countries.

In addition to the doses of vaccines received free of charge thanks to the Covax mechanism, Côte d’Ivoire has embarked on a process of acquiring paid vaccines on the world market, to protect about 50% of the population against COVID-19. The Ivorian government is targeting the vaccination against the coronavirus of around 20 million people, or nearly 70% of the population.

As of June 16, 2021, Côte d’Ivoire has 47,933 confirmed cases of COVID-19 including 47,322 people cured, 306 deaths and 305 active cases. The total number of samples is 678,807. As of June 15, 7,726 doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered, for a total of 712,777 doses administered.
