The Ivorian Association for Family Welfare (AIBEF) has initiated an awareness campaign for students of the Higher School of Economic Intelligence (ESIE) on responsible sexuality and family planning in the commune of Yopougon, on the western outskirts of Abidjan.
“Responsible sexuality recommends that young people have only one sexual partner, to protect themselves during sex with condoms to avoid sexually transmitted infections, and early pregnancy”, explained the champion of family planning, Odette Laman during of a conference, Tuesday, June 15, 2021, at (ESIE).
For her part, Ms. Akré from AIBEF called on students to have responsible sexuality, so as not to compromise their future through unwanted pregnancies or sexually transmitted diseases.
The director general of the institute, Vincent Gogbeu, welcomed this initiative of the AIBEF which will make it possible to have the executives of the future in good health.
The students said they were receptive to messages from the family planning champions. Condoms were distributed to them.
The pregnancies of young girls in school have academic, social, economic, physical and psychological consequences. In addition to the risks of maternal mortality associated with pregnancy or childbirth, young mothers are likely to contract sexually transmitted infections and develop psychological effects that are detrimental to their health, including depression, stres.
To remedy this, the contents of school curricula in matters of sexual education and reproductive health need to be enriched, because notions relating to sexual education and reproductive health are seen late. Likewise, interpersonal and mass communication is recommended, and prevention strategies are based on improving access to education / information for young people and students in particular on sexual and reproductive health, access to services adapted to the needs of young people, but also the effective punishment of the perpetrators of pregnancies.
