The populations adjoining the Ehotilé islands in the Adiaké sub-prefecture were sensitized, Thursday June 10, 2021, on the importance of mangroves around these islands, in the village of Mélékoukro, during a training session organized by the Ivorian Office of Parks and Reserves (OIPR).
The trainer, Dr Lozo Roméo N’guessan from the NGO SOS Forests, instructed the populations of the villages of N’galoua, Etuessika, Assomlan and Mélékoukro on the need to preserve the mangroves.
He explained that the mangrove is “an effective plant in stopping soil erosion. It allows its roots to filter soiled water due to gold panning, and captures blue carbon. Also, it is an obligatory transit zone for many species of herbivorous aquatic animals such as manatees and certain migratory birds, suitable for tourist activities, and the bodies of water allow navigation, fishing and water sports “
Also, the director of the southern zone of the OIPR, Colonel Hillihase Bakayoko urged the populations to protect the mangroves for its benefits. The populations as a whole have assured the OIPR of their commitment to preserve this plant from now on and to plant it for future generations as well.
