Côte d’Ivoire-AIP / Day of the African Child: notable progress recorded in recent years (Minister)

The Minister of Women, Family and Children, Nassénéba Touré, has indicated that significant progress has been made in recent years to guarantee the rights of children, both in terms of strengthening the legal framework and actions carried out by the government.

“Evaluating our strategies as recommended by the theme of the Day of the African Child this year, obliges us above all to assess our achievements and highlight the remaining challenges. Yes, significant progress has been made in recent years, in order to guarantee the rights of our children ”, affirmed Mrs. Touré, in her declaration relating to the commemoration of the Day of the African Child transmitted on Thursday June 17th. 2021 at the AIP.

Among these advances, she cited, among others, the ratification of the Hague Convention on Child Protection and Cooperation in Respect of Intercountry Adoption, the creation in November 2020, by decree, of the Central authority for adoption in Côte d’Ivoire, the creation of a National Committee to monitor actions against trafficking in child labor under the chairmanship of the First Lady, Dominique Ouattara, as well as the establishment a 24-hour helpline for children in distress “Allo 116 Child in distress”.

For Nassénéba Touré, this Day invites all Ivorians, socio-professional layers, the public and private sector, the various development organizations and associations to join the cause of the child in order to think, orient and organize his education in a plan for a national framework of well-being.

“It is about mobilizing citizens around the achievement of sustainable development goals through investment in human capital through access for all children to quality education, health, identity, recreation, the elimination of all forms of discrimination against girls, all harmful practices, abuse, exploitation , all forms of violence and respect for the rights of children to better protect them She added.

The Minister also praised the leadership shown by child protection actors during the COVID-19 period.

The Day of the African Child is celebrated every June 16.
